What is a spin bike?

2. Belt drive or chain drive?

The drive transfers your pedalling force to the flywheel.

A chain drive can create a more mechanical, road-bike-like feel. It may also produce more sound and can require more attention over time. The York Performance Speed Bike uses a chain drive.

3. Flywheel weight and riding feel

The flywheel stores rotational energy and helps carry the pedals through each revolution. A heavier flywheel often creates a smoother, more settled feel once it is moving, particularly during steady seated work.

However, heavier is not automatically better. Weight distribution, bearings, drive design, resistance system and frame stability all affect the ride. A perimeter-weighted 16.8kg flywheel can behave differently from another 16.8kg wheel with its mass concentrated closer to the centre.

4. Seat and handlebar adjustment

6. Pedals and cycling shoes

The AIC850BT still uses manually adjusted leather-pad resistance, so an app connection should not be mistaken for automatic resistance control. The Bodyworx ASB600 lists Bluetooth without naming the protocol on its current product page. Confirm the exact app and the data you want to transmit before ordering.

If you are happy to follow a class on your own tablet and control resistance manually, you may save a considerable amount by choosing a good bike with a simple display instead of paying for a built-in touchscreen.

8. Footprint, product weight and delivery

Spin bikes are compact compared with treadmills, but they are not tiny. You need space for the machine, room to get on and off, and clearance around moving pedals and the flywheel.

Measure the intended area before ordering. Include skirting boards, doors, low shelves and the space occupied by your knees and elbows while riding. If the bike will sit upstairs or travel through a narrow hallway, check the boxed weight and delivery access as well.

Transport wheels help you reposition a bike on one level. They do not turn a 60kg indoor cycle into carry-on luggage.

That is a fair compromise at this end of the price range if you value simplicity.

Choose it if: You want an affordable, recognisable-brand spin bike with essential feedback and do not need apps or clip-in pedals.

Look higher in the range if: Several people will use the bike, you need more than a 125kg capacity, or noise is a major concern.

Pure Design SB4 V2: best entry-level choice for a heavier flywheel

The Pure Design SB4 V2 was advertised at $689 when this guide was reviewed. Its main point of difference at that price is an 18kg flywheel, paired with friction-pad resistance, a basic console, pulse grips, adjustable seat and handlebars, a bottle holder and a 125kg user capacity.
